Canonsburg, Pa., Jan. 16, 2025 – Core Natural Resources, Inc. (NYSE: CNR) announced today the temporary suspension of longwall operations at its Leer South Mine due to isolated combustion-related activity. The company expects the incident to impact nearly two quarters of production, marking a significant operational challenge.
In collaboration with regulatory authorities, Core has begun sealing the affected longwall panel and plans to deploy water and nitrogen to extinguish the combustion. Development work with continuous miners is expected to resume within three months, with full longwall operations projected to restart by mid-year.
“This is a challenging situation, but the safety of our personnel and protection of our infrastructure remain our top priorities,” said Paul A. Lang, CEO of Core Natural Resources. “We are confident that these steps will allow us to resume mining efficiently and prevent future disruptions.”
The recovery process includes implementing ventilation controls and proactive mitigation systems to ensure long-term operational reliability. Core remains optimistic about achieving highly efficient longwall production in the year’s second half.
